Bailli house

Situated in Epinal park, the house has belonged to the municipality of Gembloux since 1951. This sandstone and limestone house was rebuilt in the late 16th century, partly on top of two cellars dating back to the 12th and 13th centuries. The one has a ribbed vault and the other a barrel vault.
The building was extended in 1937 with one row and a second brick tower to the west. Other changes were made to the building in the 18th and19th centuries.
In spite of its name the building was never the official residence of the bailiff-mayor of Gembloux. The name of the building apparently dates back to the 18th century, when it was bought by the notary Pierre-François Charlier, who was the bailiff-mayor of Grand-Leez.
Bailli House was built next to the old ramparts and the southern angle tower that can still seen nowadays. The building's first floor contains the municipal council room and the mayor's office. The two floors are where the Museum of Cutlery and Local Life are located.
