Death - cemeteries - burials

1. Notification of death:
This should be done in the municipality where the death is established. If you wish to notify the death yourself (this is often undertaken by the undertaker), report to the office, taking with you: the death announcement signed by the doctor

and, where appropriate :
the deceased person's marriage certificate or birth certificate
the deceased person's identity card
the deceased person's driving licence
the last will and testament (available from the population department for the deceased person's place of residence)
a confirmation of acceptance of the body delivered by the municipality where the burial takes place.

The administrative procedures are free of charge.
2. Extract from a death certificate : Procedures : An extract may be issued solely to the interested parties, to the direct descendants or ascendants producing their identity cards, to the spouse and the lawyers.

3. Burial:
The burial permit is issued by the municipality which received notification of the death.
4. Cremation : Procedures : submit a request for cremation when the death is notified
provide this request to the undertaker.

A burial or cremation may be decided upon during a person's lifetime: get in touch with the civil status department for the municipality where you have your place of residence.
5. Burial plot:
The civil status department takes care of the sale, extension and maintenance of places of burial.
price of burial plot :
• secondary category burial plot for 1 body : €125 for people domiciled in Gembloux - €187 for people from outside the municipality.
• second category burial plot for 2 bodies : €250 for people domiciled in Gembloux - 375 for people from outside the municipality.
• 1st category burial plot for a maximum of 3 bodies (vault ) : €750 for people domiciled in Gembloux - €1,125 for people from outside Gembloux.
• 1st category burial plot for a maximum of 4 to 9 bodies (vault ) : €1,250 for people domiciled in Gembloux - €1,875 for people from outside the municipality.
• columbarium : €250 for people domiciled in Gembloux - €375 for people from outside the municipality.
6. Body left to science: Procedures : report personally to the university of one's choice. At the time of death the department issues solely a permit to provide to the undertaker upon presentation of the "contract" concluded with the university.
