Conditions
The future spouses have to be at least 18 years old
The marriage has to be solemnised in the municipality where the place of residence of one of the future spouses is located.
Procedures
Between 15 days and 6 months before the date of the marriage, the future spouses have to report together to complete their "notice of marriage" document. Should one of the future spouses be unable to attend a proxy may be used to allow the document to be drawn up in the future spouse's absence.
Foreign nationals have to present the following documents:
- extract from a birth certificate (available from the municipality where you were born )
- a certificate of residence (if your residence is abroad )
- a certificate of celibacy
These documents have to be translated, authenticated by the Belgian Embassy in the country of origin.
No later than 10 days prior to the date of the marriage, a marriage contract certificate issued by a notary has to be forwarded to the civil status department.

Extract copies of marriage certificates
These must be requested from the place where the civil marriage took place: an extract may be issued solely to the interested parties who must produce their identity cards.
